Overview

As the sole designer, I took the responsibility to build the design system from scratch, defining visual foundations, creating reusable components, and documenting interaction patterns. Beyond building a library, the system became the foundation for consistent borrower and lender experiences, accelerated design-to-engineer handoff, sped up engineering delivery and established scalable workflows across products.

Context

Starting from One Button Group

When I joined the team, only a button component was in progress, highlighting the absence of a true design system. As I began working across multiple products simultaneously, the need for a unified system quickly became clear. My goal was to balance speed and flexibility with structure and governance, enabling the team to deliver quickly while laying the groundwork for long-term, enterprise-level scalability.

With limited resources and as the sole designer, I partnered with the engineering team and together we decided to use MUI as the foundation for the design system. MUI allowed us to move quickly by leveraging a reliable, well-documented component library while still giving us the flexibility to customize and scale for our product’s needs.

Design System

A Shared Design Language Across Products

The Design System was created to bring structure, scalability, and visual consistency across the borrower and lender platforms within the mortgage ecosystem. Built from the ground up, it established a unified visual language, reusable components, and interaction patterns that streamlined collaboration between design and engineering. More than a UI library, the system became a foundation for faster delivery, improved accessibility, and a cohesive product experience across all touchpoints.

Custom Iconography & Visual Language

I created a set of unique, minimal illustrations. These assets established a recognizable visual language that aligned with the product’s tone. These illustrations were integrated into the design system to ensure consistent use across platforms and touchpoints.

Conclusion

Stay consistent Evolve with the product

The design system grew from a small foundation into a scalable framework that unified the borrower and lender experiences, strengthened brand consistency, and accelerated design and engineering delivery. As the sole designer, I established the visual foundations, created reusable components, and partnered closely with engineering to ensure smooth adoption. The result was more than a component library — it became an operational backbone that improved collaboration, reduced design debt, and enabled the team to deliver cohesive, enterprise-ready experiences with speed and confidence.
